The Summary explains it pretty well. I've tried using the IDE cable the provided, my own IDE cable, putting it on a cable by itself, everything. The drive, an I/O Magic 16x Dual Layer DVD+-RW, is read by the BIOS, and its apparently a rebadged BenQ, but Windows won't boot up with it in there. Any thoughts?

I've had the same problem with mine, I have no idea what could be the matter... Mine's stopped burning now actually x.x It reads media flawlessly though, so I have no idea what's going on with these drives =/

Hope you have checked it already. However, just double check the jumpers. Make sure the hdd and dvd drive are not sharing the same boot pareameters ( primary master/secondary master etc). Also, there may be a wimpy power supply causing the problem.

My PSU is 550 watt, and I already checked the jumpers, there's no conflict. Besides, it has the same problem when its the only thing on the ribbon.

I upgraded to SP2 the other day (I was told that there was an issue with a previous windows update and DVD burners that SP2 corrected) and now it's working fine.

Did you have an optical drive installed on the pc when XP was installed?

When you say XP won't boot, what exactly happens? Have you tried safe mode?

Is your boot drive an IDE drive? or is it SATA?
