Hi All,

I am trying to set up my desktop computer so that I can pull cable to transfer video and sound to my TV for movies and general entertainment purposes.

In order to do this, I was planning to buy a new video card for this purpose as well as other purposes (SC2 among one of them). The video card I have an eye on is MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone OC 1024MB. This video card has 2 DVI outputs as well as a mini-HDMI output. It comes along with 2 DVI/HDMI adapters but from my understanding DVI/HDMI conversion does not carry sound. If anyone knows the specifics of this card and adapter, and can guarantee me transfer of sound please tell me :). I have heard cases where some "special" adapters can carry sound while regular ones do not... not sure if any of that is true.

Now my main question would be if I just bought a HDMI/mini-HDMI adapter would sound be transferred as well as video? Will they be in anyway altered to produce lower quality?

Recommendations would also be welcomed

After doing research to solve this before posting I have come across other things I am confused about. On one review of the above video card, it mentions the mini-HDMI output as a HDMI/DP output. This got me thinking, is mini-HDMI and DP the same thing? And whats with mini-DP? Is any of this in anyway interchangeable? Are there really special HDMI/DVI adapters that carry sound?

Thanks.

Display port is not for consumer devices like TV or dvd players, it is pc only right now. What they did is combine both jacks on the same port to save space. Display port moves some features that the monitor would normally have to perform to the video card for cost savings.
DVI and HDMI have the same signal, it is just a different plug on the end. HDMI and HDMI mini are the same they just shrunk the connector , like the usb and usb mini cables.

The DVI does not carry sound rumor started from people who were using video cards that could not encode sound on the dvi connector. DVI is a type of connector , just like HDMI. The signal is TDMS which has no problem carrying sound.

The card you have puts the audio out on the min HDMI so you just need a cable to fit that to go to a regular HDMI port. The signal is straight digital just like out of a bluray or other box.

Not to be a extreme lurker, just happened to refresh this page at work and noticed someone posted :).

Thanks for your response.

However you mentioned that "What they did is combine both jacks on the same port to save space"

Are you saying that either DP or mini-HDMI can use this output? I would find this quite odd.

Now time to search for some mini-HDMI adapters as the cord I will be wiring is going to be quite long... Rather buy a long HDMI to HDMI cable and just add an adapter on than to buy a long HDMI to mini-HDMI cable.
