I would like to take a multi-partitioned HD out of a machine at work, take it home and install it on another machine to transfer some large DBase files, I know this should be easy enough, but could someone go through the steps with me? The drive I'm removing is a ATA66 and will be moving it to a 33 computer. Thanks.

1) Basically you just plug the new drive in the IDE channel and power

2) Go into the BIOS and check if the computer detects the drive. It should show the drive name and model

3) Boot into windows (assuming)

4) Windows will prompt for a boot up as it detects a new drive.

5) Reboot and you'll see your new drive installed and assigned a drive letter

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the fast response! Yes, I am using win98 and the HDD's will have to share the same cable, will it matter what order on the cable the HD's are?

make sure the faster hdd is configured as the master (set jumpers on back of hdd, below logic board) and slower hdd is slave (jumpers again). the master should be attached to the END of the ata cable, the slave to the middle of the cable.

Good call C-boy. If the jumper settings are messed up, the BIOS will display some junk.

Pichead, it doesn't really matter where you put the drives. As long as the jumpers are set correctly (one master and one slave if the same IDE cable has 2 devices), you are good to go.
