I am looking at getting one of the following....

HITACHI Deskstar® 80.0Gb 7,200RPM UDMA100
ATA100, 2Mb Cache, Glass disk platters, AFC 'pixie dust' media, TrueTrack servo technology, Load/Unload ramps & No-ID sector formatting.

or

Western Digital Caviar ® SE 80.0Gb 7200RPM + 8MB Buffer
Special Edition, ATA100, 8Mb Cache, 8.9ms Seek Time & Data Lifeguard.

The WD has 8mb Buffer, does this increase preformance a decent amount???

Any suggestions on which to get? or explanations on the Buffers??

Thanks People! ;)

You cant go wrong with either drive but I think I would go with the WD w/ 8mb cache. I dont know much about this particular Hitachi drive but the 8mb vs the 2 mb in WD it makes a difference.

I have that exact drive (the WD 80GB, 7200RPM, 8MB cache), it was $80 at newegg. Anyway, I've had it about two weeks, and love it. The performance increase over my WD 30GB 7200RPM drive was amazing. I agree that you should stay away from the deskstar, cause it will end up on your desk as a paperweight.

Me and the 30 or so IBM hard drives I have in fully functional use disagree but like I stated earlier I would go with the WD. People always bash IBM for having 1 bad line of drives meanwhile Maxtor has never made one good line of drives. Go figure.

I've had that WD drive for a year now. No problems. I'd go with it, just because I've never had a Hitachi drive, and because the WD has 8MB of cache.

I have had 4 different Maxtor drives and all 4 failed within the first 6 months. They were all different series drives also. So needless to say you wont see a Maxtor in any of my or my customer's rigs anytime soon.

Hmm sitting here looking at a dead 40 gig deathstar waiting on an Rma. also running 2 DM+9 80 gig maxtors and have another 5 year old maxtor that still runs fine that just got to small to use anymore sitting on a shelf. I have used 3 maxtors 3 IBMs an 5 WDs in my personal system over the past 5 years and and more than i can count in other builds i have done for others over the years. The only ones to die on me was one of my IBMs and a half dozen IBMs I used in other builds. None of the WDs or Maxtors that i used in any build i have done has failed. IBM had a couple of bad drive lines (75gxp and 60 gxp) that had inordinately high failure rates. Never heard of a maxtor line that had such consistantly high failure rates across the board. The DM+9 line is fast quiet and so far appears to be reliable. Don't know what you are using 30 Ibm's in but I'm glad they are working ok for you. My experience has been quite different.

I've had 5 and only one has survived more than 2 years. It's currently making noises like a freaking blender.

Only 3 of those drives are mine. The rest are in business's and home pc's I have built for various customers/family.

Anyone had problems with the HITACHI Deskstar 180GXP? (a friend of mine would like to know)
