I have been an avid follower and reader of Anandtech for quite sometime, however this is my first post, so please forgive me if I have placed this under the wrong section or have left out detail.
I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice in helping me determine what could be the issue I am having with my current custom-rig (these problems have persisted since I build it towards the end of 2008.
The primary usage of my workstation is for programming, database design, word applications, web applications, digital editing, and gaming. The rig can handle all of the functions flawlessly except for gaming.
Before I go into detail about the issues I am having while gaming with the graphics, I will list my current rigs configuration:
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
MB: Skulltrail
Processor: Intel QX9775 @ 3.2
GPU: AMD/ATI 5870 Radeon
RAM: 8 gb of FB-DDR2 667
PSU: 1200W Thermaltake toughpower
HDD: 3 x 1TB Seagate drives
The GPU is connect to a configuration of 3x17 Samsung LCDs via 2xDVI and 1 Displayport to DVI (using a Active Adapter) to the 3rd monitor.
I recently upgraded to the new Radeon 5870 from 2 x NVIDIA 9800GX2s hoping it would solve my gaming issues, but this was to no avail. The problem I find is that in the initial start up of any game (save Unreal Tournament 3) experience extreme lagg, then after a few minutes the game will run fine, except for when it loading a level or there is a lot going on in the game. Even when I set all of the graphics settings to default. I know the Radeon 5870 should be able to run all of these games at almost max settings (Mass Effect 1, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 1, Bioshock 2, Battlefield, Assassins Creed, Sacred 2, Fallout 3) However every single one of these games experience some sort of lagg and in some cases will lock up and crash to windows. I have the latest drivers installed for the GPU (10.2), and the latest patches for the games, but I am still experiencing the same problems.
The only thing I can think of is that the Skulltrail has the older PCIE x16 v 1.0 slots and the current GPUs are designed for PCIE x16 v2.0, could this make a difference?
The second question I have regarding my new Radeon 5870 is with Eyefinity, the only game I have that scales appropriately is Unreal Tournament 3, the others do not. However, the maximum resolution for my monitors is 1280x1024, so could that make a difference in why some games (that AMD has listed on their website as working with Eyefinity) are not scaling correctly? If this is the case, does anyone have any monitors they would recommend?
Any feedback would be appreciated, thank you.
