My father wants to buy a GPS Navigation System for his car. Neither I nor him know anything about these things. We are completely clueless. So I decided to post here.
We need somthing that is functional, but not too expencive. However, we do know GPS doesnt come cheap.

It MUST be external, must "speak" to the driver, and be fairly reliable and presice.
Can anyone suggest a particular model or make? Thank you.

Garmin StreetPilot i3, it's cheap in terms of GPS and works pretty well i heard...

the i2 is even cheaper if you dont mind the black & white screen

Which Bluetooth GPS receiver do you have? I recently got a PDA and am currently exploring this option...

I have the same PDA, except mine is mounted on the windsheild

I use a Pharos GPS system.. Has worked great for the year plus that I've had it.

I just bought a gps system to hook up to my Dell Axim X30. Admittedly, I went with a more expensive solution because I wanted cordless bluetooth and it cost me about $120 for the GPS unit. The corded units can be had for about $75.00.

I went with Tom Tom 5 for the software and it was about $120. It has the entire US on it, and has voice directions as well as several voices and languages. Right now I'm alternating between "Uncensored Ozzy Osborne" and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

i'm currently alternating between mapopolis and iguidance. mapopolis seems to have much more intelligent route mapping and recalculation, but the maps aren't very pretty. iguidance has pretty maps and easy to read street names, but the route planning doesn't seem as good.

maybe when my subscriptions end, i might start using tomtom

I just bought a USB GPS receiver off eBay ($50) and the latest version of Streets and Trips ($24 at Sams) then hooked both up to my laptop. Works great. I also have iGuidance which has 3D mapview capabilities. So far I've been using this more than S&T but I agree with the above poster, the map routing isn't that great.

I have a TomTom GO 300 and it has been great. I found it to be the easiest menu system to work, good maps and easy to understand when you quickly look over at it, and clear voice instructions. I would recommend it highly.

Wow.. seems like I got a lot of options...

I really like the pda solution. Is there any way to hook up the PDA to GPS without bluetooth? Is there a wired solution? How's it called? - meaning brand.

yes, there are wired options

After doing some research, I decided that this: http://reviews.cnet.com/TomTom_GO/4505-3430_7-30960607.html?tag=pdtl-list
is a better option for my father, since he is reluctant to buy a PDA just to use GPS. However let me get this straight. We buy the above gizmo, and that is all we need to have GPS in our car? Is there any other "attachments" or wires we need to buy? anything at all? My dad hates "surprises" when he buys something just to find out he's missing something else.

This should be all you need, all cables/maps needed should be included in the package...

yup...you will probably only have to pay if you want updates to your maps at a later date

I have a Garmin Streetpilot i2 (got it for $200 from WalMart a while ago) and it's amazing. Got me from Detroit to Baltimore to D.C. (and many places in between) without a single wrong turn. Voice directions are flawless.

Thank you for your help guys. I hope my dad will be pleased.. 🙂

Just so you know, what you have linked looks like a TomTom GO Classic. Those are older models (couple years) whereas the 300 and 700 models were released about a year or so now. You may want to get the GO 300 which is listed at $539 at newegg becasue it will be faster, bigger SD card, and more options.

Garmin i3 works well, but information input method sucks. You use a wheel to scroll to numbers and letters to input them. Takes forever, screen is small. $289 at Costco.

Garmin c320 is a bit more expensive but bigger screen and touchscreen. Seems to have a faster processor too. Well worth it in my opinion. Got it for $350 at Fry's on sale and returned the i3 I got at Costco.
