Yeah that Sony is junk compared to this Canon listed here, I secon this opinion. I own the SD500 and it's an awesome camera.

A Sony digital camera would be the last brand I would buy...

With the price on that Sony you are looking at, you could also consider the Panasonic FZ5, at the same price range. I have the Panasonic FZ20, which is the bigger brother to the FZ5; almost identical features, but in a bigger body. The FZ20 just creeped underneath the $400 price point due to the release of the FZ30.

The W7 is a pretty nice camera. The only sucks about it is the shutter speeds can be slow compared to some Canons and Nikons. And you HAVE you use memory stick which is more expensive than SD. Imo, I think you should just get the W5 if you want sony or the canon A520 or nikon coolpix 5600. The sonys are mad fast though in between shot which is one big pro.

Most nikon's are slow after a shot to another shot cause of the processing. Canon's are really the best over all camera to get for the budget. And the Sony's don't use REAL Carl Zeiss lens either, they are decent-end lens and pay Carl Zeiss to use the name. Also note that the marco feature is nice on the sony's too.

I've owned all of them by the way.

I would not buy Sony, as many have said before...

<--- Owner of Canon digital cameras for 6 years, and proud new owner of Canon IP6600D printer which, by the way, does make excellent borderless 8.5x11 prints.

If you're willing to search a bit, take a look at Digital Photography Reviews

Your initial query says "good" digital camera. Then you describe a moderately fair point and shoot Sony. Stick with camera and lens makers - Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Kodak, Olympus, Pentax, etc.

Second the DPR check cited by Mooglekit.

i love canons, but unfortunatelly their guarantee sux, after 1 year usage it had a problem (i looked it up on the internet and found a fix), but we decided to send it. guess what, they charged like 120 $ and in the end they never returned it, they claimed they lost it and we got a 100$ voucher for a 500$ camera. Hate them for that, but canons make great cameras
