Hi,
I'm sure that this is an easy problem, but I don't know what to do. I'm pretty new to computer building so you can laugh as much as you want as long as you help. I've got a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP KT400 motherboard. I was running an XP 2000+ and that was working fine. I'm pretty sure my CPU Frequency was set at 133MHz on the motherboard, and my XP 2000+ was recognized. I just got an XP 2500+ 333FSB processor and I installed it without changing any settings. My processor wasn't recognized. The computer says that the processor is an unknown processor at 1466MHz. I'm guessing that I have to switch my CPU frequency to 166MHz on the board, but I'm sure. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

That mobo should work well with that processor. You should be able to go into the bios and set the cpu settings to auto or something and reboot and it should detect it properly. Just remember to do a "save settings and exit" when you are done.

I believe your guess is correcy. A friend had this same dilema. We set it to 166 and all was well

Yep, you got it right. 133 x 2= 266. 166 x 2 = 333. You can set it to auto and that should do it too.

the reason your CPU is showing up as a "unknown" 1466 is because it is underclocked on the fsb, the 2500 has a mult. of 11 which at 133 fsb gives you your speed. 11x166= 1826(rounded to 1833) which is the speed that processor runs at. the same thing happens with processors designed to run at 133 on a board set at 100, xp2000's often boot as a 1250 on a 100 fsb in bios. at a 100 fsb the xp2500 shows as a 1100mhz, 11X100.

i also have a gigabyte board(ga-7n400 pro) with a xp2500 booting as an xp3000 identified in the bios because i set the multiplier at 13 which gives me a speed of around 2163.

many times the numbers are approximated, the exact speed of my processor is 2162.72 with a fsb of 166.363...and they vary tiny bits by mobo make and model.
