Help with getting a laptop online

I took home a co-workers laptop today. I ran adaware and removed 1500 pieces of total spyware. I ran spybot search and destroy and removed a hand full of garbage with that as well. finally I used spyware blaster to better secure the computer. all apps that I have ran on my own computer.

the problem that he took to me was that he got pop ups every minute online or off line. now the problem is fixed.

BUT! Even after connection to AOL via his 56k, I cant get ie explorer or anything else to view the internet. not even mozilla. so I connect my cat5 from my dsl modem to the lap top, I get the 100mbit connection bubble in xp, but I get no ip.

can anyone help me out by suggestion anything that I have yet to try out? my idea is to reformat the laptop and tell the guy to get a new isp. but I know that there is a better way of doing this.

when connecte on the Cat5

run - cmd - ipconfig /release
then
ipconfig /renew

that "should" grab him a new ip

That doesnt work.

After typing ipconfig /renew i get this message

An error occurred while renrewing interface local area connection : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

can anyone tell me what this means?
