RAM goes cheap in the summer. Even on Black Friday/Cyber Monday they hike the prices a few weeks prior, then give you a small discount during the sale, so you're still spending a lot more than you should.
Just wait until next spring and you should see the same stick(s) of RAM for a hell of a lot cheaper.
Memory isn't expensive due to the time of year. The issue is a shortage in the DRAM chips, which go into more than just sticks of memory. For example, one of the reasons cited for continued shortage was Apple purchasing large amounts of memory for their new phones. The issue started with fab problems, and we just never really got back on track to meet demand.
It would be interesting as well to see how memory usage has gone up recently. I can remember thinking that 8GB of RAM was good enough in a fairly modern system, and then it became needing 16GB. Now, I use 32GB in my main desktops and 16GB in my HTPCs. (I don't just use them for video playback. For that, I'd use 8GB.)
