help with futons

hey everybody, moving into a smallish room (12X12) and i'm trying to fit a bed, couch, tv, desk and a small fridge in, so well.. bed + couch = futon so thought i'd get one

i've been looking around for some deals though, and it seems like almost all the cheap ones are uncomfortable. i've slept on a futon for a summer, and never really noticed any back pain or anything (but then again, i was 14), so i'm just wonder how much could quality matter for a futon, and how do you tell if a futon is uncomfortable or not without trying to sleep on it.

what kinds of mattresses (thickness, type?) make a futon comfortable, and how much should i be looking to pay?

Quality will make a huge difference in the comfort of the futon mattress. The comfort of the frame really won't change just how long it will last. From what I have seen the quality futons start around $300.

Find a store that specializes in them; you can get a better deal. Or you might try Ikea.
I'd recommend a wood one; steel ones can get uncomfortable plus it's bad feng shui.

I got one at Walmart made by Sealy for $180 (I believe the price is lower now). I think this is it link. It's fairly comfortable, but I put some corrugated cardboard below the mattress so I wouldn't feel the bars when I sat down

I have the same futon as yellowperil, dont buy it in 6mo it will be the most un cofortable thing you have ever sat on.
I second Amnesiac 2.0's idea to check Ikea, cheap but very nice futons.

one piece of advice:
buy the best mattress you can. futon mattresses are sketchy, and you still might wind up taking yours back.
