Help with friend's comp using MSI K7T266Pro2

My friend just bought a MSI K7T266Pro2 to replace his Asus A7A266 which didn't stop crashing.
Right now, he's using Windows XP and everything is recognized, all the latest drivers are installed and the latest BIOS is installed. The only problem, which is a pretty big problem if you think about it, is that the sound card doesn't work. Everytime he tries to just play a sound, it says that the device is out of range. He tried disabling the onboard sound even though MSI's site says that you shouldn't and it still gave the message. What can he do to fix the problem.
He has an Athlon 1.13Ghz
MSI K7T266Pro2
256Mb DDR-Ram PC2100
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
