Hi,

Anybody know if i can get a GeForce MX 420 to 100fps? If it can be done, the next question is were can i get the guts on what to do? The rest of the machine is AMD XP1800, 512RAM blah blah. I'd be stoked if I can do it.

Peace,

Yes of course you can if you run an old enough game that requires little power. Same case with virtually every video card. I'm not sure what the whole point of your question is.

The GF4 MX is holding your system back, you`re better going for a faster video card like a Geforce FX 5900,9800NP or 9600XT,as to your question well it`s vague, you don`t say what game(that would help us a lot) or resolution you`re using, all I can suggest is you try your games with V-Sync off,FSAA disabled,AF off until you can afford a faster video card.

The entire GF 4 MX series are just re-labeled GF 2's. Blow a whopping $60 on a GF3 TI and you'll be a lot better off.

You might be able to get Q2 up to 100fps on that, but you'd have to run it at a fairly low resolution. And you'll have to find an older game with good OpenGL and/or Direct 3d compatibility, something that wasn't too common in an era where 3dfx dominated the acceleration scene.

I'm sorry I wasn't more specific originally folks......

I am playing the Halflife mod, Day of Defeat at 1024 x 768 resolution and 60fps and wanted to improve gameplay (?) by getting up to the standard 100fps of other players. It was recommended I do it by other players.

I have very little knowledge of video card capability and the effect the frame cycles have on actual gameplay. I could be just following the crowd, however I haven't spotted a single other player with less than 100fps, I figure there must be reason for it. I have trolled the Day of Defeat sites looking for answers but those searches have been fruitless thus far.

Appreciating the responses,

Locked to 60 FPS sounds like the 60Hz refresh rate bug with Win2k and XP. Microsoft addressed this issue with Direct3D apps, but of course left OpenGL for the birds. Since HL utilizes OpenGL, I'm inclined to believe this is further evidence of the 60Hz bug. It's not that your card isn't capable of the framerate you're looking for with HL, it's just this bug. Now, to fix this bug, you need to use some kind of refresh rate locking utility such as "Reforce" or "Radeonator Locker" (latter is my favorite, but discontinued/hard to find, works with Nvidia cards despite its name). The quick fix is to disable Verticle Syncronization (VSYNC), but this will cause massive tearing as the card will be pumping out >60 FPS easily. HTH

Well it's quite simple then: lower the resolution and keep lowering it until you reach 100 FPS. If you get to the lowest resolution and you still haven't reached it then your target is out of reach of your system.

The significance of 99/100 FPS on HalfLife based games is that the engine has an internal framerate cap at that number.

what is with my double posts......arrgh...sorry bout that.

It appears I have fps and refresh rate confused. I have since found that the 100Hz refresh rate they are all using is to avoid sore eyes in long stints gaming from starring at CRT monitors cracking along at 60Hz refresh rate.

And taking what PliotronX and Mem have given me, I will try to change my monitors refresh rate to 100. I'll give that link a go Mem.

Is the monitor's refresh rate controlled by the monitor of the video card I wonder?

Thanks all,

Peace

The monitor's refresh rate is limited by the monitor and controlled by the video card. You change it using video card drivers. If you'd like a faster framerate in DoD, I'd try lowering the res to 800x600. You can also up the game's internal max framerate by typing ~max_fps 100[ENTER] in-game, to raise it from the default 72fps.
