Help With First Real Build

Hi.

It's new PC time and I want to make sure I do it right. I think I've got the basic specs down but would appreciate a second, third and fourth opinion. The budget is £1000. I already have the keyboard/mouse/monitor/optical drives.

Motherboard :: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe :: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products...cm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=82818 :: 99.79

Processor :: AMD X2 4200+ :: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products...cm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=91328 :: 291.17

RAM :: Corsair (TWINX2048-3200C2PT) 2GB :: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products...cm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=85958 :: 174.93

Graphics Card :: 7800GT :: http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/product_deta...tcode=1512-1815&group=PCENV&pgroup=VID :: 210.99

Harddisk :: WD Caviar SE16 WD2500KS :: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products...cm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=94403 :: 74.17

Case :: Thermaltake Soprano :: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?TT-SOPSW :: 50.01

PSU :: Enermax Liberty 620W :: http://www.fusion2u.com/cart/product.asp?intProdID=ELT620AWT :: 97.45

Total = 998.51

It's mainly the case and the PSU I was wondering about.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You don't need a 620W, 500W will more than cover it, Enermax isnt' a bad brand although my tastes run more to seasonics.

Don't buy that card, pay the extra for an eVGA card, best warranty in the world and it covers 3rd party heat sinks, you can change the heatsink and overclock and if it dies you still get a new one.

If you're going to overclock then it might well be better dropping down to the 3800X2.

Wow that is gonna be one killer rig 🙂

That PSU is kinda overkill, you can look at others with brands like fortron, enermax, antec, seasonic, ocz if they have more suitable ones.

I would agree bob about eVGA being a great card maker, their support is AWESOME! Had a really bad expierince with my evga 6600gt a while ago, had to RMA it twice, but in the end they gave me a 6800 free of charge (along with 2 copies of bf 1942 😀). They paid next day air on all of it, i'm sure they lost money on me sadly, but I'm so impressed on what they will do to make the customer happy!

Excellent, thanks. I was definitely thinking of overclocking. Do the 4200's not have a lot of headroom then?

I'll look around for an eVGA. Thanks again.

I don't think you can get OCZ in the uk, or at least i haven't seen them for sale much.

If you want a bit faster HD then a WD4000KD is almost as fast as a 74Gig raptor. (not to mention the increased storage).

What do you want the case to do? Look good? Keep the parts cool? Help you keep the rig quiet? Tt aren't great at any of them, but they aren't the worst either. I've got an old Xaser II here, and it's ok, just not great.

4200s will have slightly more headroom than 3800s if anything, it's just there isn't much point in paying that much more for what will probably be 2.6-2.7Ghz rather than 2.5-2.6Ghz. Better to spend the savings on your graphics card.

I would be kinda weary of ocing a X2. I've heard some problems with them, and also it's such a nice chip to accidentally kill (though unlikely if you are careful). The opterons are cheaper and from what I heard better to oc. Check out the cpu/pro/overclocking section for more info..

You can't get opterons in the UK for love nor money last time i heard. I spent hours trying to track them down to no luck.

I did look at that disk but it'd send me way over budget I reckon. I quite fancied the new Raptor 150GB but they'll cost a bomb and I doubt they're available yet. 😉

The case I read a review of and it basically said it was pretty good. Plus it looks quite nice and isn't too pricey. I've seen people talking about the P180 but that's a bit too highly priced.

Basically I'd like one that's pretty quiet with good cooling. Looks are definitely second to those two.
