Help with files deleted on network

QueBert

Lifer
friend has 4 PC's in his house, he accidently deleted a shared folder on the server from another PC. This was on Monday, poking aruond I've discovered if you delete a shared file or folder on a different computer, it doesn't go to the recycle bin, Googlingt hsi it seems this is normal (did not know that)

I downloaded the demo of GetBackdata and it's nto finding anything. Since he killed the folder just a few days ago and hasn't wrote much data to the drive I would assume even if they're poor quality the files would show up as being deleted. He did remake the folder but isn't 100% sure it's the same name. Not much of a computer guy so he can't tell me much.

any way to get the data back?

any way to get the data back?

Pandora Recovery helped me in what might be a similar situation. It is a free download. It finds files, or parts of files, that bypassed the recycle bin. Do not, of course, install it on the affected drive. Best of luck!

There are recovery programs that claim to recover deleted network shares. I don't know if GetDataBack claims so or not. I own a copy, but I've never tried it with deleted shares.

File Scavenger definitely claims to work on deleted network shares. You can try it for free. It's $49 to actually recover significant data.

Hopefully this will encourage your friend to start making backups of important files.

thank you for the reply! I did scour Google for network specific file recovery programs but the only 2 I found didn't do anything. But, both mentioned here are ones I haven't tried.

RebateMonger - trust me he'll be backing up after this. I'm going to go ghetto and create a scheduled task that will back up the folder every night. Unfortunitally he's been using the computer since Monday, I told him today to not touch it until I get there tomorrow. But I don't think (hope) 5 days of use will make all the files unrecoverable. He hasn't installed anything, but he did restore some of the files via flash drive, he had a couple of them backed up I guess.

Neither program works, I think he did something else, I was able to see files deleted 2-3 years ago but not the ones from Monday, not sure exactly what he did but they're not there.

If the files are not showing up in any of the file recovery programs, he probably renamed and/or moved the folder and didn't actually delete it. Try searching the "server" for the name of one of the files that was in the missing folder.
