Help with external DVD-RW!

Hi,
I have an external DVD-RW (Cendyne, Pioneer 105) in a generic external case. Unfortunately, I can't get the drive to read any DVDs or CDs (burned or regular), but I CAN burn DVDs (and right after I burn them, the drive can't read them). I thoguht it was a problem with the drive, so I returned it for a new one, but the same problem arose. My external case uses an Oxford chipset (IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device). Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks!!!
