Question help with email client

Don't know much about email, and lately been having problems with Thunderbird. Wife and I have been using the same email addresses for many years (actually, decades) and I would prefer not to have to change them.

But, seems like Thunderbird is often very slow in fetching my emails from the server (at Spectrum). To test this, I set up the MAIL program that comes standard with Windows 10, and it seems to fetch the emails quite a bit faster than Thunderbird. I suspect the trouble is with Thunderbird.

I would simply switch from Thunderbird to MAIL, but MAIL has no capacity to write message filter rules, and that is important to me. I've tried other email client programs and don't like them. So. I wonder if I can use the GMail user interface (GMail client?) to fetch and apply rules to my emails? But, I do not want to create an email address at gmail, just simply use their client to get my emails from Spectrum.

Is it possible to do that?

Just use the free personal version of eM client. It's easy to set up and the interface is minimalist so it's easy on the eyes. Just plug your email servers in and go.

I don't think you can use gmail without an actual google account...

I have used Thunderbird portable on (now Spectrum, previously another ISP) for years (same data, just upgrading the version every now and then with many thousands of emails categorized by folder in it) and have no slowdown, checking a mix of both Spectrum and other domains' accounts.

Is it possible you were just experiencing a problem with Spectrum's server? I do notice that every now and then.

I would set up a test folder with a clean/unaltered Thunderbird Portable in it and see if that's faster.

It is possible that if you have built up an extensive set of rules, that in itself is causing the slowdown. That, and add-ons can slow it down. If a new Thunderbird portable is faster, you might try only implementing the most important rules, remembering that you can do all this and leave your current Thunderbird installation alone and intact, still working. Just don't set it to delete emails as you download them so you have some left on the server to work with using Thunderbird portable to test.

I do have a large set of message filters (32), and have sometimes suspected the server. I'm not familiar with Thunderbird portable........is it a smartphone app?

No, Thunderbird portable is the same windows app, just set up so it doesn't need installed, keeps all files in whatever folder you put it in, doesn't conflict with having Thunderbird (non-portable) installed, though you probably can't have both running simultaneously.

Since it doesn't need installed, you could put the folder it's in, on a flash drive or whatever and launch it from a different (windows) system if you wanted to, or a single folder shared by clients on a lan (as long as it's one at a time, not concurrent access), etc, hence portable.

I use the free and very outdated but quite functional Postbox Express. It is based on thunderbird, I believe, but it works great for me.

Gmail setup was a breeze. Not sure if it can still be downloaded.

Check Windows Event Viewer to see if there is anything suspicious.

If you are still using hard disk, an upgrade to SSD might speed up the program quite a bit.

I tried eM client and did not like it..............are there any other ways to get the Gmail program?
only way to use gmail is with a google account. that said, you can set it up so that it can check pop/imap and use the other address as the reply/sender account. so if your concern is that people will start emailing to the gmail account, that isn't an issue.

This. I bailed on Windows Mail within days of upgrading to Win10. eM client does a good job for what I need at home, Outlook for work.
