I got the very popular 8x NEC dvd burner, but everytime I burn the max speed shown in Nero and DVD Shrink shows 4X. Is there anyway I can fix this? Thanks in advance.

you may be using 4x media?

I had no idea software could detect what kind of media I was using. I don't know of any 8X media that is out. Also, my friend has been successful in burning at 8x on 4x media.

the drive reads the maximum speed and reports it to nero.

Your friend can do it because he has better discs. You use sucky discs. Just like the lakers.

J/k! Go lakers!

I have the highest rated Ritek dvd-r- disks on New Egg! They were supposed to be amazing. Come on!

YOu should find out what he's using then. I take it you have the silver matted tops, the GO4's?

Yeah, the tops are silver, but i'm not sure if they're GO4's. I got THESE.

I have the same problem, I recently bought the same DVD burner that you did. I think we need new Firmware to burn at 8X, which hasn't been released from NEC yet. I found hacked firmware that will do it, but I haven't gotten around to getting it going yet. Some good info here

Basically what happens is that the firmware detects the DVD you are using and sets a maximum speed, which nero can detect. You must find a way to modify your firmware (check up on NEC dvd writer forums) and change the maximum values for your specified media.
