Help with Dual Opteron

I went 2x1gb myself. The Corsair cas2.5 reg ecc 3200 for just under $140 a stick shipped is a good deal on good stuff right now 🙂

Note that you *must* have registered RAM for opterons. Not sure about ECC, that is probably mainboard-dependent but in doubt you need that, too.

Aslabs (Linux vendor) delivers fine systems with Tyan K8W to my employer.

They also delivered trash Xeons 😉 but the Opterons are nice, 120mm fans etc.

Hey guys,

For a dual Opteron system, is it better to get 4 sticks of 512MB ram to get 2Gigs or
2 sticks of 1Gig?

Depends. If you have a motherboard with only one set of RAM slots (so the processors share memory), it would be better to get 2x1GB. If the board has two banks of RAM slots (so each processor has its own RAM), you should get the 4x512MB, and put two DIMMS on each CPU (so that each one can use its dual-channel memory controller for maximum performance).

Matt, that's what I thought. I figured the Opteron's would be dual channel, hence having 2 sticks for each processor.

Like he said though, it depends on wether the board has independent memory adressing or not. Having a cheapo dually that uses the shared architecture I had a one track mind, so my bad 🙂

No problem, I should have mentioned that i would be getting a very good mobo.
