Help with drive assignment

So I built a new computer but my primary drive will not default as C: it is defaulting at E: for some reason. It is a sata drive and I am pretty sure I plugged it in at the Sata 1 port which is why its booting up as my primary right? I tried to do the manual drive assignment but windows won't let me. Any tips? Did i actually plug in the sata port into the wrong spot on the mobo?

It doesn't matter what drive is placed into what SATA slot since you sellect the boot drive in the Bios. AS for why the drive shows as E: and not C: may be some sort of mixup durring the Windows install. I take it you have 2 optical drives that are IDE? If so make sure they are on the secondary IDE chennel and not the primary. Unless of course your motherboard only has a single IDE connection. But before reinstalling windows make sure the drive you want is selected as the primary boot drive.

When installing a new OS on a computer, if you have multiple formatted drives windows will ask you which drive you would like to have your OS installed and this in essense would be your default boot drive.

Is it XP? Do you have a card reader installed? This is a known problem with XP. Have the card reader disconnected during the install. Connect it after you've finished.

hmmm i gotcha. would you guys suggest me doing another clean install then? I don't remember having a card reader plugged in when i did my os install. but yah the os is XP. Its not THAT big of a deal but I just feel like its an issue because my wifi program won't boot up since its set up to look under c: for the drivers. right now im using the windows default wifi software and i heard the detection of the signal is reduced as opposed to the factory clients.

The only way to correct it is to reinstall. If you have no card reader, make sure the only HD connected is the one you want XP on.

Before you jump in, what is the drive configuration of the computer? We need to figure out why you ended up with E: instead of C:. Is this a new HD? What drives are in the system? Both HD and Optical.
