I am trying to set up wireless in my dorm room. I have netgear wi-fi router.
When everything is connected, I can see the wireless signal and my computer(win xp) tells me there's one there,
but it remains unavailable. I have it set for windows to try to identify the IP by itself.
Is there anything I can try?

What exactly is it? Can you control your router from your computer? If so, can you connect with any pages on your college net? Were you able to connect to the net with a direct connect cable? If so, Some schools control access to their net based on MAC number. You may need to clone your MAC address (tell your router to use the same MAC number as your computer) or tell your net administrators that you've switched devices and want to change your MAC address.

Or it could be *usually is* something else entirely

if you dont have WEP turned on XP sometimes wasnts you to check a little box saying you allow it wo connect to unsecure wireless networks or something like that...the box comes up when yuo double click on the network icon in the taskbar for the wireless connection if I am not mistaken

I'm having similar problems myself. My little connection icon is a bright "excellent link quality" green, but it seems to fade in and out connection. I've even sat with my laptop right near the wireless router "antenna" and it still happens so I know its not the range. I also made sure the box saying "connect to insecure connections...." was checked.

So...the connection will be great for maybe a minute, then go dead and I have to reconnect again. Any tips?

Update your WAP firmware and your cards drivers

I also have the box checked.
I think it could be a conflict between the IP of the college and the router?
I can connect directly with a cable from wall to computer. That works fine,
but nothing with the wireless

why woudl you need wireless in your dorm room?

unless of course you have a huge dorm room(pity my 10x12's).

is it really that far form one corner to another that you cant just run (a much faster) wireline to your computer?
