Help with defrag-96% fragmented drive and it won't finish....

waking up one day and the computers slow, go to Norton speed disk to defrag and it won't finish. Tried deleting programs to open more room on drive as it was almost full, and that didn't help. Any ideas? Thanks

This might sound stupid, but did you empty your Recycle Bin?
How big is your drive?
How long has the Norton defrag been running so far?

Didn't stop to think about Norton; re-installed, optimized/defragged files and free space separately, and then a full optimization and IT WORKED.
