Hi all,

I currently have 4 4GB modules of Mushkin Redline in Dual Channel for a total of 16GB.
The exact model: 996981 DDR3 1600MHz PC3-12800 CL7 (7-9-8-24)

According to this, Dual vs Triple Channel does not matter much on LGA1366.

I am looking for the most cost-effective upgrade, bearing in mind my CPU is overclocked.

- Should I add 2 8GB sticks to my setup? If yes, which ones would more likely work with the 4 modules I already have?
- Should I buy the exact same model? Ramexperts still sells 2 4GB sticks for around 120$ including shipping. I would get 24GB in total.
- Should I buy another 4GB model from Mushkin with similar timings?
- Or replace the whole thing with 3 8GB sticks? (which should work on LGA1366 although not officially supported)

I would appreciate any opinion :)

Those timings look pretty unique, The least complicated thing to do would be to get 2 more sticks of the same. There are lots of sub timings that can vary quite dramatically.

oh, of course, sorry about that, the model is EVGA X58 FTW3 E768 LGA1366.
You can install 6 sticks on it but I am only using 4 sticks so far.

Deders, do you think these sticks would work?
Mushkin Redline PC3-14900 (1866MHz), CL9-10-9-27

Should it work if I downclock them to 1600MHz and match my old RAM's timings?

It would be much cheaper than importing the identical model.

Be careful. It looks like your ram is 1.65 volts so you're going to want to match that.

This looks like one that will run at 1.65v and at the same timings, you'll just have to adjust the speed.

https://pcpartpicker.com/part/mushkin-memory-997006

Here's a list of Mushkin Ram that runs at 1.65v.

https://pcpartpicker.com/parts/memory/#m=28&t=11&Z=8192002&V=1650,2500&sort=a10&qq=1

thank you, I was not aware of the voltage change.
I guess reusing these sticks at 1.5V in a future rig (Skylake will run DDR3 RAM as far as I know) should not be a problem?

The modules you found seem identical to what I have except the color, I hope it'll work.

EDIT:
Would I be better off buying two or three new 1.5V 8GB modules? And selling what I have?
Is it more future-proof and easier to overclock on my current rig than 1.65V RAM?

If the ones you have are too expensive then this would be the best option. Some Skylake will be DDR4 which might limit your options. You can always sell both sets.

I found this kit on ebay.
It's 1.5V, 1600MHz, CL11 (I did not find more info on timings)

It's not that much more expensive than an extra 2 sticks once the 20% VAT is removed.

I also found a G.Skill RL Series DDR3-1600 24GB(6x4GB) CL9 (9-9-9-24) kit with XMP and 1.5V.

Would this be a good upgrade and not hinder an overclock to 4GHz or more?
(EVGA X58 FTW3 motherboard, Xeon X5675 CPU)

I could even finance it if I manage to sell my old kit Mushkin REDLINE 3x2GB Kit, DDR3-1600, CL6-7-6-18@1.65V) and the 4x4GB I am currently using.

You might want to opt for some 1866MHz Ram if you want 4GHz+, I don't think it would be much more expensive.

where I leave, the cheapest 6 sticks 1866MHz module costs 35% more than the cheapest 6 sticks 1600MHz module.

would it still be worth it?

But it might be cheaper if I can combine 4 and 2 sticks, I'll check.

I am leaning toward this RAM for the time being:
http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-12800cl9t2-24gbrl
1.5V, 1600MHz, CAS9 and lifetime warranty.

If it's really easier/better to overclock with 1.5V RAM, I might get it and try to sell my current modules.

EDIT: Oh I could get 24GB of these for 150$: http://www.poweredbymushkin.com/index.php/catalog/item/5-redline/35-992083.html
1.65V though...
