I have a magicstor microdrive CF-type II card, and I was using it in my canon s50. After one picture, the camera just froze.... the access light on the cam for the CF card kept blinking for a few minutes, then the camera powered down.

So, now I fear I have lost the data.

When I turn the camera on with the card in it, it takes a long time to boot up, and when it finally does, it recognizes the card as 2.0gb, as it always has. Also, when I go to format, it says 2.0gb with 0kb used *BUT* the little bar graph shows some usage of the drive. When I try to format the card, the camera powers down, (I was trying to format because I am told I will be able to recover the pictures if there is a recognized logical drive.)

I finally hooked it up with my card reader, and no surprise, windows reports there is no disc in the drive - so I got some software, for data recovery - Stellar Phoenix FAT + NTFS Version 2.0 (http://www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm) Which scans the drive (4192965 sectors) and reports there is "no valid logical drive found" - so I am unable to even see if there is a possibility of recovering the pictures.

To top this off, I am travelling and using internet cafes. where I do not have the ability to try to format the drive at the dos prompt....

Any suggestions at all are welcome, I'd really like to get the pictures back. My guess is I will have to wait till I get home and then send it to some data recovery place and pay an arm and a leg.

I'd hoped that because the computer and the camera both recognize the card (though windows doesnt) that some data recovery software would let me look at the info on the card. What good is data recovery software if you need a valid logical drive to access the data? And why not have the ability to create a valid logical drive from within the software? I have no idea....
