Okay I screwed up. In haste I ordered 2 sticks of 256meg crucial cl2 PC133 fpr my Aopen AX6BC Pro Gold. It does not support this type of ram, only ECC CL2 for the 256 meg sticks. I already have one 128 cl 2 crucial in and just sold my other one today as I knew my 512meg would be in. Well the 2 256's crash any 3D apps I try even @ 3-3-3. My question to u gurus is: should I sell my last 128 and buy 2 256 ECC sticks? Will the ECC slow me down much? and does the size increase warrent the slow down? OR>>>Should I send back the 2 256 and order 2 more 128's or should I trash this mobo and look for another? My 700e@966 is starting to show it's age, so any, I mean any input is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Email Crucial, they will most likely let you exchange for the price difference. Lot quicker than ordering a new mobo.

The MB will only take Registered SDRAM, which cost about $30 more per 256MB stick. But I think usually Registered came with ECC (not exactly sure though, but that's the case I've seen so far). Performance wise it'll be slightly slower, but not that much.

thanks guys esung what mem setup are u using? I could always return the 256's and get 2 more 128's(that run flawlessly) and have less ram or get the ecc and have slightly slower performance not sure which is the right way to go..:p:disgust:

if you're not a server & you don't use mission critical data then you won't need ECC ram! :)

thx bacillus, I understand that. But I don't have any other option if I want to use 256 meg sticks, my question is will I take much of a performance hit? I don't care if it costs me another 20.00 dollars. :):Q:(

the performance hit is only a few %. (I'm not sure, never benched it, but it's not significant). I'd say it's worth it to have more RAM. (of course, depends on if you can use that much RAM)

thanks ensung well I have decided to retire the rig. I sure hate to get rid of the AX6BC Pro Gold(It has been the best mobo I have ever used..Period) Going to go with a T-bird and just keep the ram. the 700@966 has been great but I think it's time for upgrade, the registered ram is alot more than I thought. gonna go for a Compuwiz T-bird I guess it is a logical upgrade untill I go to DDR ram I guess..Thanks again for the input..
