Help with Creative 52x cd-rom

The damn drive mysteriously died on me, just under a year of use. Anyone know of any problems with the drive? Probably no warranty because it was an OEM drive. It makes a strange noise when it's slowing down, sort of like a scratching noise. The eject button, lights and the tray works fine. Don't know why Windows hangs on it. On bootup the system recognizes the drive fine...

I spent two hours troubleshooting. First the computer would only boot into safe mode, if I tried booting it into normal mode, it would get up to where the antivirus scans on bootup, and then just stop with the harddrive light on. So I tried booting with nothing on the second controller (3rd harddrive, and cd-rom). Booted fine, so I went with just 2 harddrives and a cd-rom. No go, so finally went with all three harddrives and no cd-rom, the machine booted fine.

So anyway, is the drive definitely dead? I mean, everything seems to work except when Windows gets to it. Even the system recognizes it.

You didn?t mention what type of UDMA drivers your system uses. Changing these drivers or settings can have adverse effects on ATAPI CDROM operation in Windows. Try booting with the Win98 boot disk, selecting boot with CDROM support. If you can access the drive then the problem is with the Windows drivers. Most likely the drive is just bad, being that they are going for under $40 I would not expect much longevity, - M.

Well... figured it out.. it was with Win98, cuz I stuck another cd rom drive in there and no go... so I just reinstalled... was gonna do that anyway. Thanks though...
