help with cooling down son's pc

I am posting for the first time, but have been reading on here for a couple of weeks or more. First of all, thanks to all of you who post their knowledge and experiences to those of us who gain from reading them. My son's pc has had trouble overheating:
1) generic case from fry's...have no idea what, if any, fans he has.
2) he has an ABIT NF7 mobo where the NB chip fan is dead...a free pc help lab at his school told him his problems and not to restart until he replaces the fan on the NB.

I am driving down to see him and I bringing him anew case and hopefully some coolers to help him out. He isn't a heavy game player, older games maybe..doesn't overclock, just mainly a workstation pc. My plan is as follows:
1) Lian Li PC7B Plus II....didn't want a case that had any doors or alien faces on front, but have a question here...is that a chanel under the location of the PSU or is it completely open underneath..hard to see with the photos on newegg.
2) Seasonic S-12 PSU...not sure what wattage yet...should the fan be on the top or bottom when mounted?
3) Zalman passive HS on the NB and changing out his stock cpu cooler to an Artic Freezer 64 Pro..not sure if this will work though..doesn't say it fits Socket A, does anyone know if this cooler will fit a Socket A?

I'm not sure why you're replacing the case, psu, & cpu hsf if it appears only the nb fan has died?

If it's a generic case just cut a hole or two in it and throw some fans on the holes, no need to spring for a Lian Li!

If you do spring for the Lian Li, as per your ? regarding the psu's fan, if you mount the fan facing up, how will there be any airflow? Or are those vents on the top of the case I see? If those are vents, face the fan up, if not, face the fan down. You don't want the psu's intake fan pulling air from inside the computer if you can help it.

And to my knowledge, the AF 64 is exactly that - meant for 64 bit chips, so only S754, S939, & S940. (64 bit AMD-wise.)
 
sorry..didn't explain enough...I have another son, at home, who needs parts and a case. So I'm just spreading parts around between 3 sons. Still trying to learn here, the PC7B PlussII has no vent on the top of the case, so if I mount it facing down won't it suck in warm air form the cpu? That is why I was wondering if the PSU sits in a chanel leading to the upper front drive bays? Do you have a suggestion for a cpu cooler for socket A?
 
actually, it is hard to tell if the PC7B Plus II has vents on the top..from the pic..it looks like it does now that I look closer. Does anyone know if it does?

thanks ..found both those coolers at newegg. Hope one of those works well enough with the passive Zalman NB heatsink so cool it down some.
 
Might also want to take a look at the Spire VertiCool (for Socket A). The other option would be to get a Thermaltake Volcano 10+, a 60-80mm fan adapter and then mount a quiet 80mm on it (that's what I've done and it works well for parents' comp).
 
rallymaster...thanks for the options, I'll probably do the TT option or just the TT volcano extreme..depending on cost difference. I have noticed on other posts you have recommended the PC7B PlusII before..do you know if the top has vents so as to place the PSU fan side up? And is that a chanel right under the psu position that leads to the front drive bays?..thanks
 
thanks MS..but since I can't tell from the photos of a PC7B PlusII..after the psu is slipped in from the back is there a solid piece of aluminum under it forming what I would call a chanel or duct to the front drive bays, OR is the psu open to the bottom half of the case, thus drawing in air from the entire case as opposed to air contained in the 'duct'?
