help with construction/home improvement question!

I have a single post in the middle of my garage, is there a way to remove the post and have a support beam put in across the ceiling of the garage to hold up the load of the bedroom above the garage?

Someone had suggested that this is pretty straightforward and common. Is it? How much would something like this cost to get done by a licensed general contracter?

Thanks for your help?

You'll need to contact an engineer and have them look at it. Yes, it's doable, and likely not too expensive, but there are way too many variables for us to answer the question.

You could try Home Depot, they order Glu-Lams and such and may be able to give you a lead.

Hope this helps!

What he said is correct.

What Alien said, and: One issue you have to contend with is how tall the beam will have to be to span your garage and still carry the weight. You may have to install 2 or 3 beams to carry the weight. Also want to look at differnt types of beams and see which would have the shortest height.
