Help with computer - no sound out of speakers

Ok, here's my situation...I have an old 233MHz machine, 64MB ram...It's my kids' computer for them to play their games on...I found the specs and it is capable of hodling 128MB Ram. So, I upgraded it from 2 32MB Ram sticks to 1 128MB Ram...Everything ran ok for a few days. Last night I installed an old NIC card, because eventually I am going to rout them to the internet via our cable modem. That was planned for down the road though, but I figured they were in bed, so I wouldn't have to fight them to install that card...So I put it in there, everything appeared ok. Win 95 couldn't find the driver for the card, but that should cause my problem...

Problem: Now when I load one of the kids' games, it runs for about 5 seconds then gives me a memory error. Also, there's no sounds on anything I run. Some programs run ok, but all programs have no sound. Not even the music that plays when you turn it on...And it was running ok before I put that card in.

So I took out the card, rebooted, same problems.
Even changed the memory back to the way it was, same problem...

The only other thing I did was spray some canned air to clean it out a little (VERY dusty in there). I cleaned the fan really well, it had a lot of dust bunnies on it...

Any idea what went wrong? Could the canned air have messed anything up?

leave the 128 in...take out everything but the essentials....reset cmos.....clear nvram....(gotta clear all the junk the new stuff did to boot up sequence)....reinstall sound drivers.....i doubt the air can did anything unless u sprayed it while the comp was on and the spray can was tilted (spraying it tilted causes the crazy cold air to come out...condenses immediately...looks like ice is coming out...water goes on board...etc etc)...but if it was off...and it dries rather quickly...then there should be a problem...

i'm sure these aren't immediate solutions..but they're a start....
hope that helps..goodlucks 🙂

I don't think it's the ram either, because I put the 128MB in, and then replaced it with the original 2x32MB sticks, and still get the same error...

Dan, can you dumb that down a little bit? 🙂 Not very knowledgeable about the innards of computers yet...
"reset cmos.....clear nvram....(gotta clear all the junk the new stuff did to boot up sequence)....reinstall sound drivers....."
How do I do these things? Also, not sure where to get the sound drivers, it's kinda old (5 years) so I am not sure where I could find any of that info...

Easiest way of getting sound drivers is to locate the sound chip (will be the biggest chip of the sound card) and note down what make and model it is off that and then search for drivers.

Does it say maximum 128mb ram?.....how many memory slots....some boards can like accept 128mb maximum.....have 2 slots.....and 64mb maximum module size....but not all boards.

That machine will handle windows 98.....I would suggest that either now or as a future option....much better with drivers than 95...so you would be able to get the NIC working.

It can take 128MB...There's 2 slots, and from what I've read, they don't both have to be filled...

It's a NEC Ready 9840.

Of course I just now read, here, that it takes up to 32MB Sticks, with a maximum of 128MB (That means I'd need 4 slots, but I only have two...so maybe my max is 64MB...

I replaced the 128 with the original 2x32 sticks...

Still same problems...

Any ideas??? I'd like to get this running by Xmas so the kids can play the games they're getting...
