Hello,

I noticed that my Sony 52X CDROM was quite slow while installing software packages, and when tested in a CD burning package, the read rate tested between 12X and 16X (20 or so tests). I have W98SE, and would appreciate any help in fixing this problem.

Thanks, MrBrewer

look in device manager under properties of the cdrom drive to see if it's using dma.
if the box next to dma is unchecked, check it!

Thanks very much, good to be here!

Will check out the DMA thingy, should my CDRW also have DMA checked??

Yes, your cdrw should have DMA checked as well. "Any" drives that you have, including hard drives, should have DMA (Direct Memory Access) checked for best performance.

OK, I have looked at the settings for both drives, and DMA has been checked all this time.

The SW I'm using for the speed check is Prissimi (SP?) Plus, the data read portion of the built in explorer.

My 52X Sony CDROM gets a consistant 17X, my 24/16/48 CDRW gets a consistant 21X on data read speed.

All programs are shutdown (except for systray).

Any other tips/tricks to try? Any pointers to CD troubleshooting guides / FAQs?

This obviously is not disabling, just quite frustrating!

All help is greatly appreciated!
