My friend has an HP Cd-writer 7200 series IDE. It was working fine on her old computer.
When she got a new computer (Dell, P3-600, 128mb), she moved the CDR drive to the new computer, and the computer always crashes whenever she tries to burn CDs.

Any idea what's wrong?

Her IDE devices are a HD, CDROM, CDR, and ZIP.

Dell has been known to use weak PSes. My sister's P166 came with a 145W PS. the CDR could be taxing the PS which can cause such problems.

wait, i just read the rest of that post, yeah, the PS may not be strong enough. try burning without ALL of the drives being powered (well, you need the HDD, :p) of course you would have to change jumper settings while you are at it.

Try this . . . disconnect the Zip drive. Then make the CDROM drive slave to the HDD and run the CDR drive as Master by itself on IDE channel 2.

If that works, then try running the Zip as slave to the CDR drive on Channel 2.

A bigger power supply might help, but that should be taken into account if you run without the Zip drive.
