Help with cable Hd

i recently got cable with the hd receiver and don't know if I have the set up correctly. I do know that my tv has a QAM device built in. Currently, I have it set up through the s-video connection instead through the RF, which I heard was of lower quality. I have tried to see if some channels looked "HD" but I can't tell because I don't know if I have it set up correctly. I don't know if it should be connected through RF or S-video. Thanks for the help.

"RF" is not a connector type. You mean the coaxial that the cable signal comes in on, maybe?

S-Video is most definitely NOT HD in any way.

If your TV has a QAM tuner (with Cablecard if required), plug the coax cable from the wall right into the appropriate input on the TV.

If you can't do that, run the coax to the cable box, and then run component or DVI/HDMI to the TV.

It should be glaringly obvious if you're looking at an HD feed, since it doesn't look nearly as crappy as regular SDTV.

IF you are using an HD cable box, you should be running via either component or HDMI/DVI to the TV.

The RF input of your TV would be for your TV to tune unencrypted channels, and should not in any way be associated with your cable box.

the thing is that I called the cable company yesterday to inquire and make sure I had an HD receiver and was told that I did. The only available ways to connect to the tv is either from the wall to cable receiver to tv via coaxial/RF, or from wall to to cable receiver to tv via S-video. I cannot do it through component or HDMI because there is on way to do it from the cable receiver.

Then you need to tell the cable company to send you an actual HD cable box with component and/or HDMI/DVI outputs.

But if your TV has an HD tuner built in, and the HD channels are unencrypted (or you have a Cablecard for your TV), you should be able to plug the cable from the wall right into the TV and have it work.

i suspect I don't have and HD receiver because when the cable guy installed it he told me they were out and I should call to get on in a month. Well I did, and I was told by the operator that box I had WAS an HD receiver. Guess I am going to have demand a real HD receiver. I will try it straight from the wall and see what happens. Thanks for your help guys.

You most definitely do not have an HD box if it has no component for HDMI. S-Video is 480p max... EDTV. Your cable company is stupid and wrong, I guarantee it, lol.

P.S. If you are on comcast or similar, spend the 5 bucks more a month for the HD-DVR over the HD cable box, its well worth it.
