Help with buying a video editing package

I'm running a dell 400sc with no firewire and I want to install a card that will allow me to import video both from my new mini dv camcorder and older analog stuff for cheap, edit it, and then burn it to DVD. I was looking at the following possibilities.

1) buy something like This a basic firewire card bundled with Primiere elements for dv, and then buy a seperate tv tuner, vivo, or AIW card for analog input.

2) buy this a combo card that according to Tom's Hardware has a good software package, but I can't find any other reviews to confirm this. (this is the slightly cheaper version with no front panel.)

3) buy the better known Pinnacle card, but I've seen a number of bad reviews.

Basicly I'm really confused if I should be worried more about the software or more about the hardware, and which combination is best.

Thanks for any help.

If I were you and all I needed to capture from was the mini-DV cam, then a simple firewire PCI card and the appropriate software is all that is necessary.

I know some guys say that you can capture from PCI 2.0, but I question whether the bandwidth is there to make it work well. Firewire is the way to go for sure.

This card is probably going to meet your needs.

I use Ulead products to capture, edit and burn.

I capture and edit with Ulead Video Studio 8. Then I use Movie Factory 3 to import the video, create the menus - chapters and burn it to disk. This combo works well for me and is pretty easy to work with.

I've heard too many bad things about Pinnacle products to recommend them. Most folks you'll run into either love them or hate them.

Good luck.

I agree with TourGuide. I also use Ulead to edit and burn, but for some reason I have been using the default windows movie maker that came with XP Pro for my capturing.
Maybe because WMM automatically recognized my MiniDV cam when I first hooked it up via a firewire cable.?

Firewire seems to be the way to go. I used pinnacle for a little while, but there were freezes and hangs and their software seems spotty time and again. Theoretically it's great, but practically it's not.
