I have a gas oven at my place here, and all of a sudden it won't work anymore... the last time I used it was this past Monday and it was still working... is there a pilot light or anything for it? When I turn it on, I can smell gas after a while. I know the stovetop burners have a pilot light, but what about the oven itself? I NEED MY OVEN :p

edit:

hehe I know how you guys like pics with everything :) I don't wanna do anything until I'm 100% sure where I want to light... I don't want to blow up my neighborhood... so here you guys go:

oven pics!

my question is, is that thing that I'm pointing at the pilot light for the oven? judging from the pictures from the stovetop, it seems like it- the little tube thingy comes from the same doohicky as the pilot light thingamabobs for the burners. help!

edit2:

yay! it's fixed! thx guys :) I was gonna post more pics but I figured you guys wouldn't care :p so I'll only post if you guys request them ;)

<< There should be a pilot you can access through the broiler... >>

...what he said. If there are pilots on the burners, there's one for the oven too. It's below the oven, in the top of the broiler, near the rear.

Ok heres what ya do. Go to your stove, and turn it on. Then, go watch TV for an hour. When your sure youve been there an hour, go back into the kitchen and open the oven door. Take out a bic lighter and light it in the oven. Voila! Your stoves pilot light will be lit.

Works like a champ for placing me in orbit every so often when I need a vacation from this planet.

It could be the ignitor for the pilot light. Those burn up pretty quickly. I've had to have more than one replaced.

Good plan.

Do you hear clicking noises when you turn it on? Or does it just light up?

I had no clue it lit up :p actually, I never knew how a gas oven worked. I just turned it on and it got warm :) Anyways, no I don't hear any clicking... I don't think there was clicking before either... so I guess what you're getting to- if I heard clicking before, but not anymore, it could be the clicker that's broken? :)

the clicker is for electronic ignition, it creates a spark, kind of like in your car, so that there's no energy wasted on a pilot light. if it's an older model then it doesn't have that.

there's also this other thing which is a rod that gets red hot and lights the burner that i've seen on gas dryers.

Most likely it has pilot. The pilot is out, but you shouldn't smell gas because the pilot control valve shouldn't let the gas come on with the pilot out.

If I were you I would replace the thermistor(looks like small sausage right over the pilot light) and the control valve(follow the small tube back from the thermistor, it should have a button on it).

This all assumes that this stove isn't an antique.

At the very worst, you can light it bunsen burner style.

Hold a long lighter or a match near the burner and slowly turn the gas on :)

"Do I light this?"

That's the thermometer.

"Is this the same as this?"

That's the thermocouple that lets the gas valve know there is a flame.

I bet the oven pilot is underneath, above the drawer or broiler. At any rate, I'd look into getting a new oven. I bet it's doable for $250.00.

The tube thingy (all of it, from the tip in the oven to the oven control that it goes to) is the oven thermometer. That's not it. Get down below the oven, there should be a broiler. Pull it
out, you should be able to see the oven burner up inside there. At the rear of the burner is the oven pilot light. Forget about clicky things, you have pilot ignition, not electronic ignition.
Use a fan to blow away the gas in the oven and broiler, then try to light it when you can't smell gas anymore. If you wave a lit match around near the pilot light, it will catch.

Or you can call the gas company....they'll look at it for free :)
