OK OK, this has been a pain to try to figure out but maybe you guys can shed some light.
Here's the scenerio:
Our office, 25 or so nodes/client pcs, 1 Windows2000 PDC, all running TCP/IP with a subnet of 192.168.1.x netmask of 255.255.255.0, we had our DSL router on 192.168.1.254 but problems with the provider means DSL is down for now, our Windows2000 server is distributing ip's from 192.168.1.11 - 192.168.1.199, Win2k server on .10
So I came up with an idea, attach a router and intel wireless access point at the next door business, gave the access point 192.168.1.250 and the router 192.168.1.251, still the 255.255.255.0 subnet mask.
Works fine over there, DHCP of that router is distributing 192.168.1.200 - 192.168.1.249
So I plug in a linksys wireless usb adapter to the windows2000 server, connect to the access point and recieve good connection, having all the ip's mapped out correctly between the two networks I think i'm all set and this is just going to work.
WRONG! when both the internal nic and the wireless usb nic are active at the same time, you can't ping things on the wireless side from the console and when you unplug the inhouse nic leaving the wireless as the only connection, you can.
At this point i'm frustrated not knowing what I need to do it correctly so I opt to put the other network on 10.0.0.x and adjust ip's accordingly and then bind ICS on the 2000 server from the wireless adapter configured @ 10.0.0.10 with a router of 10.0.0.1 and access point of 10.0.0.2 to the internal nic which connects to our network.
Everything works fine this way, but i'd love to know how i could seemlessly just make everything work in the same subnet so every computer on our network could see/ping/use the machines attached via the wireless adapter, sure I can do this from the 2000 console and the routing does work with ICS to our network for internet but i'd like it to all work together without having to have separate subnets.
I plugged the wireless adapter into a XP box and enabled "network bridging" and that allowed me to do it, but I must have this adapter on the win2k server and i'm sure there has to be some way to do this.
Can anyone help me out with this?
thanks in advance, must get it going all in the subnet this morning
