I need help with trying to troubleshoot a new computer. I started to put the copmputer together, put the power supply (apevia 500w) and motherboard (MSI K9AGM2) in, plugged all the case connections to the motherboard, plugged the power supply (20 pin ATX and 4 pin CPU) and placed the CPU (AMD 5600 XP) and heatsink in. Then booted up, power supply came on and that was it, no BIOS beeps, no VGA output. I don't know if it's a MOBO or CPU issue, everything was plugged in correctly. If anyone can help before I return these. Thanks.

So you built it from the ground up, empty case and everything?

Did you dry test out side the case first (usually recommend with that many new components)?
Did you use the Motherboard standoffs in the case?
Did you use the little paper washers on all but 1 mounting screw on the motherboard?
Have you jumped the PSU yet to see if it will power fans and the like?
Is there a little light on the mother board?

From the ground up, a little present to myself after 6 years from the last time I built one (think I may be a little rusty)

Did not dry test outside the case first

Did use the motherboards standoffs but did not use the paper washers

The power supply fans work and the computer turns on but that's all there is from the motherboard and no lights at all on the motherboard.

Hrm... Remove items from the case, 1 by 1 (optical drives, hard drives, expansion cards, video card, CPU, RAM) until you get to the point that the machine either turns on or doesn't after you get down to just PSU and Motherboard... then you should be able to safely say that the Motherboard is shot.

However, if after removing say... the sound card, the machine turns on, put back everything but the sound card and see if it will turn on again. If it does again, then the sound card is the culprit... you get the idea.

Heh! Golden...

That's EXACTLY what I do!

Sometimes I bench build a computer for months, before putting it in a case...

That's the beauty of removable trays, IMHO - perfect for bench builds! ;)
