help with brake part

No Lifer
'96 Eagle Talon ESI (non-turbo)... the brake light engagement mechanism more specifically.

The issue: when the brakes are released, it no longer turns the rear exterior brake lights off, so it stays on indefinitely.

The cause is near the brake pedal - a small dime-sized plastic blue disc that's cracked/broken and no longer engages(?) into a slot when the brake is released. That's the explanation my dad gave me. What is this part called since I'm trying to look for it on car part sites? Or what is the whole assembly called?

^ yes that's what it appears to be as a mechanism now that I look it up. Is there a part specifically the size of a dime? Is it just a washer? Sleeve, spacer, bushing - which may not have anything to do with why the light is on? Does the whole switch need to be ordered? Does the piece usually come separately?

This is just a random diagram I found and may not apply to the car.

You're missing the plastic or rubber bumper that hits the switch. You may be able to find one that works in the 'Help' aisle of the parts store or something.

edit: or the switch is broken. Unsure based on your description. Should be a cheap fix, either way.

This is an image of your brake pedal, one showing brake/clutch setup, one showing brake pedal for auto.

You've got a problem with your brake light switch (#6), which mounts in front of the brake pedal as seen in the image below. That's all you need. It works as such: When you apply the brake, the switch button extends and turns the brake lights on. When you let off the brake pedal, the brake pedal arm contacts the brake light switch, depressing the button, turning off the brake lights. The switch has to be adjusted so it works properly via threads and a locknut.

well I have the broken part in hand here and it's not the brake light switch itself as pictured above. It's the small blue plastic disc which that piece (the smaller end) comes into contact with. I need a name for it. 🙁

Where does the disc attach to? Brake pedal?

Yes - it is "stuffed" into a hole along the length of the brake pedal much like a lego piece. Since we want the brake light to engage asap when depressing the brake, as soon as the brake light switch no longer contacts this disc along the pedal, it will turn on the lights.

(EDIT>> fucken-A got it right above - and I finally understand his name) 😀

I google "rubber bumper for brake light switch" and found a pic. Autozone says I have to buy the switch along with it so we'll see tomorrow. Thx.
