Help with BIOS.......

Hey guys, got a slight problem and hope someone can help me out...

I installed second HD, and did auto primary and slave HDD detect on BIOS, saved and exited, and now it won't start. All it does is freeze up just before reading RAM at start up like it doesn't see the HD.

I have a start up disk but it won't read it either. A drive's light doesn't even come on during start up like CD ROMs, like it isn't seeing A drive.

I've triple checked cables and jumper setting and they are on tight.

Right now, I've taken off second HDD and went back to the original HD which was working just fine until I messed with BIOS. I still can't get to BIOS or DOS, curser still stays and blinks in a point just before RAM starts to count during the start up.

Any ideas how I could get back in BIOS, DOS or get the HD going???

Does anyone know how to get into BIOS if computer won't let you?

Do I have to mess with jumpers on motherboard?

Oh, system is P3 450 with Win98 OS.

Thanks in advance.

You need to reset your CMOS settings.

Consult your Motherboard manual.

Noramlly this is done by disconnecting the power, and changing a jumper on the board. You may also need to remove the battery.

Then reverse the proceedure and you should be good to go

Thanks for respose Drewpy....

That computer is 5 years old so I don't have the owner's manual.

So what do you mean by changing jumpers?

Can I reset the CMOS just by removing the batter???

Any idea what the model is? Can you give us any numbers, or something that looks like a model number off of the board? It's possible that the manual can be downloaded.
As for the BIOS reset jumper, it usually is a jumper near the lithium coin battery on the motherboard, but it is probably not a good idea to change jumpers whose function you don't know.
Just removing the battery should do it. Anyone else can answer this for me: would it also be a good idea to then short the battery contacts for a few seconds to make sure there's no residual power stored anywhere in the circuit? Funny thing about that is, I forgot to replace the BIOS battery in my mom's PC when I was working on it - it actually retained the BIOS information, through several power cycles - completely off all night sometimes. I'd never known of any PC to do that.

I just been looking at the motherboard for about 10 minutes, and for life of me I can't find the model name or the number....

There is a small lithium battery on the MB, should I remove that one also?

u might want to try this (it seems to work for me when i'm really stuck like u):

look at the motherboard and find the BIOS chip. it might say AMI or AWARD on it or the name of your BIOS-maker. Usually at least 1.5 cm^2 in size.

near to it (within 5 cm) there should be 3 pins, on two of which a jumper will be placed. Move the jumper to the 'empty' pin, thus overlapping the central pin.

---- -----
i.e. |* *| * would become * | * *|
---- -----
* = pin
| = jumper

next press the power button, the PC may start or not. After 5 secs or so press the power button once again to switch off (may need to be held for 4 secs?)

move the jumper back to where it was and switch on power again.
and this usually works - although i haven't tried it for a PC such as yours. wats the worst that could happen?!

Ok, I just tried to move the jumpers and before I start it up let me show you the pics of before and after. I didn't have 3 separate jumpers, it was bundled into a plastic cap.

Before jumper move

So basically before jumpers were paralelled to Bios and now it's like T-shaped.

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my plea for help.

I finally got it going and is reinstalling OS.🙂 Don't asked me what was the problem or what I did to correct my problem, although I do think removing lithium battery did it.

You guys are an awesome techs. :thumbs up:

Now, only if I could figure out way to not display my signature everytime I post, it will be good.😱
