ok i upgraded my old computer from an xp 1700+ to an xp3200+ barton.....my mobo is a msi k7n2 delta....what settings do i have to make to make the comp. run at the correct speed? when i start the comp, it says xp 2500+

i increased the fsb clock to 200mhz i think? and now it says xp 3100+....so i figure if i increase it in 1mhz increments, it will be 3200+.....well i did and i only went to 203mhz and it was still saying xp 3100+.....once i try 204mhz, it doesnt boot up at all. when it comes to increasing speed and stuff....im clueless. any help is much appreciated. ill answer any questions anyone may have.

mobo - msi k7n2 delta
cpu - amd xp 3200+ (barton) w/ thermaltake volcano 9 hsf
ram - 1gb corsair value (2x512mb)
hdd - maxtor 250gb 7200rpm ide

If you have a 200Mhz FSB 3200+, and you are running with a 200Mhz FSB, it's running at the right speed (you can check it with CPU-Z). You may need a new BIOS for your motherboard's bootup display to get the names right.

well i looked at the description of the one i bought, and it's a 400mhz FSB with an operating frequency of of 2.2ghz and voltage of 1.65V

-does the voltage matter at all?
-so if it says 400mhz fsb xp3200+, then should my mobo fsb clock speed be 400mhz as well?
-would the ram i have be enough as it is...2x512mb pc3200's corsair

I looked at MSI's website and it says your motherboard supports up to a 3000+, but that just means that is what the BIOS will reconize in this case. Like Matthias said run cpuz (cpuid.com) and make sure it is running at 2.2GHz. If it is (and it more than likly is) you just need to do a BIOS update that will reconize the newer CPUs. I was going to look and see if one was available but the MSI site wouldn't let me in to their BIOS page.

No run your FSB at 200MHz (AMD are run dual channel (if you will) and a 400FSB CPU is to be set to 200 in the BIOS (More than likely you can't set your BIOS to 400 anyway) . Your RAM is what you need to run at the new spead.

Your mulitplier should be 11 for the CPU. Your FSB should be 200MHz. 11*200=2200. That's stock AXP 3200+ speed.

Edit: your RAM should be at 200MHz also.

ahh i see....thanx....

-keep fsb to 200mhz -- CHECK
-CPU multiplier set to 11 = 2.2ghz -- CHECK
-RAM at 200mhz as well -- CHECK
-update BIOS -- CHECK

one more newbie question unfortunately: how do i know if the RAM is running at 200mhz?

Well, I'm not familiar with that particular BIOS. If you have ratios, it should be 1/1. Or if you have a percentage, it should be 100%.

Your BIOS should tell you the frequency it's running at. It should be 200MHz, the same as the FSB.
