Heres the story...
a couple weeks ago I switched my case from a ordinary enlight case to a Thermaltake Xaser II Case A5000A Full Tower Case and I installed a swiftech MCX462 heat sink with a thermal take cool mod 2 as the heat sink fan on top. The computer ran pretty stably for about a week and then it started getting hotter for no reason. It got to 60 degrees C constantly and would reboot so i underclocked to a 1.2 ghz computer and it ran stably for a few days. Than one morning i tried turning on my computer and I smelled smoke and heard "system failed cpu test" from my bios' post.

I took apart the computer after that and looked at the cpu and rubbed it with alchol to clear up the artic silver 3 and it looked like it hadnt been burnt. I can't get it to boot up anymore with even the stock heatsink and I think that the processor is fried but im not completely sure, Im hoping my motherboard shtu off the computer before it fried since its supposed to. I might have it tested out soon at a local computer shop in Cedar Rapids. Im wondering that if it doesnt work, would i be able to use my amd warranty because I bought the retail version. I didnt overclock at all and Im pretty sure the heatsink was installed correctly, i spent a good 30 minutes to install just the heatsink. If I can get a exchange from amd, where should i contact them about it.

my specs
Asus a7v8x
Athlon xp 2000
2 x 256mb ddr pc2100 (kingston and corsair)
radeon 9500 pro
Antech 530watt true power supply
swiftech MCX462 w/ coolmod 2 fan

I coincidentally run the same board and chip btw is urs Tbred or palomino?, you may want to check around the edge of hte chip for any chipping or whatnot that may have occured while u were installing the heatsink, another thing to check is your PSU, youve got a nice power supply but maybe your voltages arent tight enough. I had a problem with my system locking up in games because my agp wasnt getting enough voltage maybe your running into a similar difficulty here. I would be carefull with the chip however if it does haev chipping dont put it into a new board i did that with an old athlon 1.4 and it fried a brand new board.

I dont have my chip here because I left it at a friends but Ill go check if it has chipping sometime soon although I dont remember anything like that. The processor is Thoroughbred. How do I check if my voltages aren't on level for my powersupply manually? I'm still wondering if more or less frying ur chip is covered by the amd warrenty.
