I am think of getting the maxtor 40 gig ATA 100 drive. But I have also noticed that alot of people are talking about the 50 rebated you get when you by the drive and card combo. My question is do i need the converter card and what is it for.

Thanks

Na, You don't really need the Card. Unless you run out of IDE ports.. So if you already have 2 hard drives, you would need the card to install another one. The ATA100 bonus isn't really worth it. But since there's a $50 rebate, and you get the card for free, It wouldn't be a bad idea either.. My rebate came pretty quick.

The card is just for if you don't have extra IDE slots or your board doesn't support ATA100. You don't need it but it ain't bad to have either.

I just got it for the hell of it. Loaned it to my friend. When he finally gets a new computer, I'll take it back and add some more IDE devices to my system.

Current hard drives can barely push 40MB/s, who needs ATA100? (If you have to spend any extra money on it, I'd say no - but if you're getting a rebate, go for it)
