Hi,

I recently purchased a Asus P4G8X motherboard and am having some initial problems with simply starting my computer straight after installing it.

The hard-drive and floppy drive lights flash on. The CPU fan works as does the Hercules Prophet 9700 fan. Yet nothing appears on the monitor and there are no POST beeps.

If it's helpful, here are my computer specifications:

Intel P4 2.4 ghz
512MB 3700 DDR RAM
Asus P4G8X (Granite bay) motherboard
Hercules Prophet 9700
Westwern Digital 80GB
Samsung 17GB

Any help will be very welcome.

Try booting out of the case with just the CPU, Memory and Video. If it posts then start adding one item at a time you the problem shows up again. If you get it to work and put it back in the case and still no post, you are shorting out the MB in the case. Ape Out.

I have an Asus P4T-F, and mine would constantly restart. It got to a point when it wouldn't even get past the POST before restarting. I had the internal speaker unplugged because it's attatched to my bezel which isn't on the computer right now. My friend came over to take a look at it, and plugged the internal speaker in to hear the POST beeps to see if anything was wrong... and it started up no problem. I would just check really quick to make sure that the speaker is plugged in all the way (and that it isn't plugged in backwards, if that matters).

Ok guys, thanks for replying so far.

I just tried what Ape suggested and still don't even get any POST.

I've tried the following sequences:

With the following peripherals connected:

1) Hard-drives, floppy drive, CD-ROMS, agp graphics card and RAM connected. No Post.
2) AGP GFX Card and RAM connected. No Post.
3) RAM connected. No Post.
4) Only P4 processor connected. No Post.

The internal speaker has also been connected through-out, but I'll double-check just to make sure. I'm starting to think that there is a problem with the motherboard :frown:

Anymore comments and suggestions are still welcome.

Minimum to post is CPU, Ram and Video. Will not work if you dont have atleast these three plugged in (even if they are all good). If you tried that and it dosent work, and if you know the other items (CPU, etc.) work, RMA the new MB. Ape Out.

Is there anyway to totally confirm that the processor/RAM is actually working? Given that I can't get POST or any kind of visual detail on my monitor - all I have to go on right now is just fan movement.

What brand & model are your power supply, and did you plug in the secondary 4-pin power cable to the motherboard, as well as a power plug on the Radeon 9700?

We got it to boot up. FINALLY! It turned out that the motherboard was in too close contact with the metal case and therefore, that was shorting it out before it had a chance to boot POST.

Thanks for all the help.

One last question, we plugged in the radeon with our 3-year-old 300W power suppy (as instructed on the POST) but that took us back to square 1. We chucked in an old PCI Voodoo 3 3000 card and it all worked fine. Now my question is; is the Radeon not working because my power supply cannot sustain my processor (2.4 ghz Pentium4) and the Radeon 9700?

Regards.

Most likely correct, the PSU can't hack the load. If you get a new one, make it a name-brand one and not some chintzy flashy one full of LED fans and skimpy internals. Antec, Enermax, Sparkle Power, Heroichi, PC Power & Cooling, Enlight... yes.
