Maybe Mechbgon or pbaris would know the answer to this:

Got a new board and athlon xp 1700 from newegg + 256 mb kingston ram - hooked everything up - got the compgeeks silver case w 400w psu

1. when i power up - i mean when i flip the psu sitch - the psu fan works for one second - the cpu fan just jerks slightly - the green pled on the motherbd does not light up - then nothing happens - is the mb bad?

tried using a working psu - nothing happens

read thru earlier posts about cpu telling everything to shutoff - cpu looks fine

2. found a loose jumper (small black one) on my worksurface - all the jumpers on this mb are blue and slightly larger - i have no idea where this came from - checked floopy / hdd / cdrw etc - any clues where this goes? can someone please check their mb and see if they have anyother jumper besides blue?

3. to make sure that the mb is faulty - i intend to do this - take the cpu / hsf off (retail version) and power up the mb - the greenlight should light up? yes/no? can somebody point me to instructions on unseating the cpu

heres the worst part - fractured my left elbow - so i have just one working hand - i can ask someone to help but he knows nothing about working on computers - but he is excelllent in following instructions....

what else should i be doing - thanks in advance - sorry this post is disjointed - morphine at work - i guess.....

First thing to check is that you've got the heatsink on in the correct direction. Check figures 7, 13 and 14 of this guide here: guide in PDF format The board will power off if the CPU isn't getting good thermal transfer, and it will happen very fast, definitely under a second judging by the times it happened to me.

Secondly, if you hooked up any USB wiring from the case (I'm not familiar with that case), unplug it for the moment and see if that helps.

The board should have jumpers on the CPU/FSB 100/133 pins that are just above the AGP slot. On the top row, you want a jumper on the left pair of pins, and on the bottom row, you also want a jumper on the left pair of pins. My A7N266-VM does have blue jumpers and so do all the others I've seen, that I can recall.

I have my retired (and perfectly healthy) A7N266-VM in my lap plugged into a spare Antec TruePower330, and even with no CPU, no RAM and no cards, the green LED lights up when the PSU has power. Tripping the Power Switch pins with a key... the PSU spins up its fans (dang these babies are quiet :D) and the board sits there and looks at me. I don't have a speaker plugged into it or I'd probably be hearing a bunch of beep codes. Hope that helps, anyway :) I'll check in on you when I get home. Sorry about your elbow, by the way... hope it "defragments" quickly for you. ;)

Also, you might want to pull the board out of the case. If the LED on the board is not lighting up when the PSU has electrical power from the wall, something's wrong. Maybe the board is grounding out on a part of the case where it shouldn't. Take it out, let the PSU sit for a few minutes to reset, then do like I did: lay the board on cardboard or something, plug the PSU into it, and give the PSU power. The LED should light up. Next, touch the Power Switch pins with a metal object momentarily to signal the board to power up, and the PSU fans should start.

The Power Switch pins are the 4th and 5th from the right, on the bottom row, if that helps.
