I have a 700mhz T-bird and I'm finally getting around to putting some goo on it. I havent been too concerned about it because I have a MSI K7T Pro mobo and only o/c to 735 or 750...but I figure better safe than sorry...

I went to RadioShack and got the silicone based compound. What is the best way to get the sticky thermal pad off of the heat sink, and the residuals off of the cpu?

Once I put the compound on, how often should I reapply?

also, should I keep the four sticky pads on the cpu?

thanks

rubbing alcohol does a good job of getting sticky stuff off cpu's..there was a thread about that recently....

YES! keep the pad's on..they prevent the heatsink from literally crushing the die

you should not have to re-apply the heatsink goo unless you take the heatsink off in the future, and even then you may not HAVE to

best thing to remember is that you need to apply the goo in a THIN coat...thicker is DEFINITELY a bad idea.

also remember that the RS stuff tends to dry up after awhile, unlike the market leader arctic silver which is far more expensive!
