Help with apache

I have 2 comps connected with a crossover cable. One runs w2k prof & the other has w98se.

I have apache installed on the w2k comp for a assignment I'm doing at uni & I need to run tests non-local tests on an applet I'm developing. The only way I can get it to work is by connecting both comps to the internet & running apache on the ip number assigned by my isp.

Is there any way I can set this up using the network connection rather than relying on the internet connection or would I need w2k server to do this sort of thing?

Thats the way they are set-up - ones on w2k's on 192.168.0.1 & the other .2. But putting 192.168.0.1 into the address bar of ie on either computer simply brings up the dial-up box. When disconnected from the internet the only way to view pages hosted is by entering 127.0.0.1/locathost in ie on the maching running it.

You need to assign a "virtual" IP address to the fixed IP address and then create a virtual server with that address.

For example, if your fixed address is 192.168.0.1, just create a virtual of 192.168.0.3 and setup your server on it.

This is probably going to sound like a real lame question, but how do I assign a virtual ip address?

I was kinda wanting not to have to bother with linux. Any idea how long it would take to get my head around networking/samba in linux, I don't really have a lot of time at the mo & was hoping to just stick with w2k.
