HELP with AMD Tech Support - AMD Athlon XP 1700+ Retail & AMD Retail FAN Serial # correlation?

Hey guys, I have a AMD 1700+ XP that just bit the dust. This was purchased retail from NewEgg back in jan 02 so it is still under warranty. Unfortunately, when I called AMD
they were looking for a serial # off of the top of the fan/heatsink shipped with the processor.

I no longer have this fan/heatsink combo and they won't provide support for me without
it.

I am wondering if anyone knows the correlation between the serial number on the
fan and any info on the processor? In other words, if I bought a XP 1800 retail
just to get the fan, is the serial going to give away the fact that it wasn't shipped
originally with the XP 1700?

Since I paid $133 for this last year, I feel entitled to a warranty repair (used a SVC copper heatsink anyway) regardless of the heatsink I used. I had a 2000XP OEM go bad and
knew there wasn't much I could do about it. This CPU has never been overclocked.

Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately, AMD is within their rights according to the warranty to not help you if you used anything but what they provided in the box. It's on the first page of the warranty booklet. But, it does only state that you need the serial number from the fan when you call. However, XP series processors do have a serial number on them, so it's likely they're matched. I don't feel like taking my heatsink off to compare. 🙂

Kind of makes you reconsider bothering with a retail CPU, even if it's only 5 bucks more expensive, if you won't use the heatsink anyway.

Incidentally, one of the fans I have from an XP Palomino has a serial number 44445375 on it.

Reading this page: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20030322034857.html

I think maybe the 5375 is corresponding to the last 4 digits of the serial number on the processor. The Palomino also by the way has the serial number on the core, but T-bred and Barton have a plate stuck to the package.

Theoretically, I'd say since the last 4 digits might be a serial number based on each batch, MAYBE you could find another processor with a serial number that's the same if the numbers get reused with each batch. But, the chances of doing that even if it's possible are slim. 🙂

Hmm... two CPU failures. Same motherboard? If so, what model? I'm just thinking about the poorly-documented OVERVOLT jumper featured on some Asus boards here.

Used in an ECS K7S5A and MSI Nforce K7N420. Both died in the latter. The
new XP 1800 retail I purchased works fine in both boards.

I'll check the serials on the new 1800 heatsink and the 1800 itself to see
if it jibes with the info above. If so, I may be able to just give them a
4444XXXX number and get support.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Oh, as for the warranty crap, AMD is in the rights, yes. But the
Thermaltake I used is *identical* to the heatsink I see on my 1800.
The SVC is a lot beefier and has better cooling capabilities. I'm pretty
damn sure it wasn't heatsink related. Who knows. Could have been
a short somewhere, bad power, thermal paste connecting two gates...
