Help with Alpine head unit power issues

I have a CDA-7840. I got it all wired up and plugged it in, and it powered on but the output was really low. Even in the high 20's you could barely hear the music. I had a hunch that it was starved for power, so I turned the ignition on rather than just running off the battery, and it fixed the problem. It worked beautifully for a few days, then one day it did the same thing when I started my car, this time with the car started. I drove for about 20 seconds and the sound came back at regular volume. Then about a week ago I was driving and it was fine, until I hit a bump and it went out. I stopped to eat, turned the car back on to leave with no success still, and about a half hour later when I was almost home it came back on for on reason on a smooth road. Friday it worked fine for an hour long drive. I parked my car for the weekend, started it again yesterday and it was out when I started the car. I drove home yesterday afternoon and this time it never came back on. I took the head unit out after I got home and tried jiggling wires, but nothing changed. Now I am pretty stumped, and don't know if it is a head unit problem or a car problem. I had another 7840 before this one that had the same problem when I got it (came with the used car), but now that this receiver is doing the exact same thing, it makes me suspect the car rather than justifying that both receiver are doing the exact same thing.

Anyone know what's going on?

isolate the problem. Pull the HU out of the car and power it up directly to some spare speakers. Use a 12v power regulator if need be.

Alright it's definetly the head unit. Any idea why my car would kill it after less than a week, and how the heck I am going to fix it?
