Help with ailing computer

Help Needed!

My computer has recently become all messed up. It became choppy to operate so I figured that I would reformat, and my problems would be solved. However, that was only the beginning. First of all it took 16 hours to format a 15 gig HD which, right there, is a problem. Now after the format the computer was still very choppy when executing programs, and I don't have a complete idea why. Additionally, the screen almost "flickers" at all times, for the image on the screen seems to "jump" up and down a couple of times per minute (I feel that this is my monitor which is pretty old anyway), and that problem seemed to appear at the same point when the computer became choppy.
Now like I said I am not sure which piece of the puzzle has gone awry, but I figured I would leave it up to you experts. Could it be a bad HD??? It does seem like, when playing games, that the computer reads from it constantly, so maybe that is my problem. However, could it be a bad videocard causing the choppyness and "flickering." Additionally, I checked the BIOS and it told me that my ccpu was operating at a faster speed than it should have, but it was set at the appropriate speed, so I have no idea what that means.

Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide.

I purchased the computer last summer, and here are the specs:

Intel PIII 733
Videocard: ASUS v6600
MBO: ASUS P3V4X
128 MB PC-133
Maxtor 15 gig. HD

Nobody has any ideas/suggestions

I know most people don't like to respond to junior members, but that is becuase they killed my other account for having an aol email address, and the damn admin. won't reply to my messages.

People please provide your help...I beg of you

16 HOURS TO FORMAT A 15 GIG HARD DRIVE?!!!!!! DAYUM!!!!!!!!!

I would say that you have major hard disk or ide controller issues. There may be a warranty on the drive...plug in the serial on maxtor's site to see if you can get an RMA....also there may be some disk diagnostis programs on the site as well.

Thanks...i will check out the site ASAP.

Do you think that the video problems I am having are associated to that somehow, someway???
( i can't see the correlation, but who knows).

Again, thank you for giving me feedback, and I hope it is just a simple hard drive issue!

Also, check BIOS settings for cpu and fsb speeds. If fsb is higher than it should be, the cpu would not only be running too fast, per the message you got, but PCI bus might be overclocked as well, and this could cause hard drive problems (among other things).

But would the bios randomly change??? and is it possible to be set too high immediately after reformatting??

Thanks

If PCI bus is overclocked (because fsb/divisor in BIOS isn't 33Mh), one of the problems can be system file corruption, sudden or gradual.
