hey guys,

been looking around this week for a videocard for my friend which i will get him as a christmas gift.

I built his computer almost 2 years ago (i think? maybe longer). anyways he has an athlon xp processor with 1 gig of ddr ram and currently ati 9600 video card with 256mb of ddr mem. i am willing to spend about 150$. a possible problem is that he only has an antec 350W power supply.

The main contenders seem to be either the x800pro or x850pro videocards from ati or the 7600gs/gt and 6800 xt videocards from nvidia (in my price range, so i have neglected the 7800gs and x1650/1950 videocards).

If anyone can help me find the power requirement for these cards cause from all that i've read the best choice would be the 7600gt but i'm afraid that his power supply couldn't handle it. If this is the case is there a big difference between x800pro and x850pro? i've been reading reviews alot and it's all confusing since the series have so many variations on the same chipsets (pro, xt, xtx, gs, gt, gto, etc).

Also i know that he has no interest in buying a new computer anytime soon, as he probably would use such money towards a gaming console, but he does play a lot of computer games so i know my gift will be appreciated (especially since he always notices how good the games look on my computer compared to his).

thanks.

happy medium

ffind out how many amps on the 12v+ rail and get back to us. The 7600gt needs about 15 amps on the 12v+ rail.
I would just grab him a x850 pro for about 140$ I don't think you can find a 7600gt in AGP flavor?

thanks guys for all the advice. you just confirmed the conclusions i made while researching my little gift idea. all i really needed to confirm was that his power supply could handle the x850pro and the there is a significant performance increase compared to his 9600 (btw happy medium, he doesn't have the pro version of the radeon 9600).

thanks guys, now all i need is the best price to canada. it's a good thing i have a few weeks left to Christmas.
