My primary router is a netgear wgr614 v6. My secondary is up in the attic, a Buffalo whr-hp-g65 running dd-wrt firmware. It worked fine when not working as an access point. The 2 routers are connected via ethernet cable. I've disabled dhcp on both routers, and the wireless works great up in the attic, i did connect to the internet up there with a laptop. Wireless also works great down here by the primary router. The problem is, the internet stops working after 5 minutes, and i must go to control panel-network connections, and repair it. Same thing with wireless. My guess is i messed up on the ip's, the part of the tutorial i was reading, that part didnt make sense. My primary is 192.168.1.1 . what do i make the secondary, acting as the access point? Right now, my modem is just wired to my pc so i dont have to reset every 5. any help would be appreciated!

You turned OFF DHCP on BOTH routers? Then what is assigning IPs on your network?

You should have the Main router connected to the cable modem and have DHCP turned ON on this router.
Then connect the other router (acting as an AP) to the first router. Turn DHCP OFF on this router.

Then you should connect to the wireless AP and go through to the Router to get IPs and such. Or others can plug directly into either one too.

on the netgear router, the lan ip is set to 1.1, but then below that theres the dhcp server that says 192.168.1.2, and i can't change it to 1.1 . wtf

this is seriously killing me. is there another guide, other than the one at dd-wrt.com, that helps you setup a access point?

this is what i've done. log into buffalo router (secondary) change mode to AP, diable dhcp, change the ip to 192.168.1.5 (1.1 is my primary, 1.2 is questionable because of some option)connect both routers in lan ports to eachother. no go

define "no go"...when you plug into the buffalo, do you recieve a dhcp address? if you assign a static, can you ping 192.168.1.1? do you get a dhcp address when you plug into the netgear?

you need to set a high and low ip address (or dhcp range) for handing out to clients. there should be 2 text boxes labeled accordingly in the dhcp config.

if you set your buffalo to 192.168.1.2, you want your range to start at least at 1.3...conflicts and all.

Maybe post some screenshots as well of the main setup ages for both routers.

It should be very simple.

First router, basically leave everything alone. Leave DHCP on, let it assign IPs, etc. You can define a range of IPs it can give out and save a few for anything you want to assign static. SO let's say that router is 192.168.1.1. Set the DHCP pool to 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200.

Now on the second router, turn off DHCP and assign it a static IP of 192.168.1.50 (just picked 50 because it's a nice, round number). That should really be all there is to it.

In the first picture, I'd change that to Static IP and that's where you put in the 192.168.1.xx for whatever you want the router's own IP to be on your network. Then further down you Disable the DHCP stuff.

And I don't think you have to worry about that Advanced Routing page as long as you have DHCP turned off.
